29) Craig Johnson New York State Senator (D-Port Washington)

Even though a Power List honoree can only occupy one spot on the list, there are two very different Craig Johnsons. The first is the anti-politician who is likely to show up at a political event wearing shorts and a baseball hat carrying one of his sons on his shoulders. The other is a shrewd and ferocious negotiator who digs in his heels and fights for his district. Not all of his stances are popular with Long Islanders outside of his district but make no mistake, Johnson has not only become the most influential LI state senator, he’s fast becoming one of the most influential in the state.

... This prompts Johnson to say as he did Wednesday: "The bottom line is, I am pro-taxpayer. What's becoming clear is, if something that's good for special interests is bad for my constituents, I'm going to stand with taxpayers in my district."

He wasn't shy about underscoring other positions deemed irritants to union lobbyists: his support for a property-tax cap and praise for unionized teachers in Roslyn and Port Washington agreeing to a pay freeze. "I'm not worried," Johnson said. "I'm doing what I think is right."

Senator, residents spar with county authority

The topic of brown water was on tap at a hearing Monday morning at the Elmont Library, with irate residents packing a meeting room to air what, in many cases, are 30-year grievances.

The issue, which homeowners in Elmont and Franklin Square have long been familiar with, is the occasional brown — or black — tap water flowing from area faucets. State Sen. Craig Johnson (D-Garden City) organized the hearing after getting multiple reports of the reappearance of undrinkable water in many homes.

Teaching unions a thing or two

By FREDRIC U. DICKER in Albany and CARL CAMPANILE in NY

Two pro-charter school state senators delivered a statement to labor leaders yesterday after the unions launched a campaign against them: We stand up to schoolyard bullies!

Deputy Senate Majority Leader Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) and Craig Johnson (D-Nassau) dismissed the AFL-CIO's distribution of leaflets that attack them for championing an expansion of charter schools and opposing unions on other pocketbook issues.

Here's another interesting tidbit from Mayor Bloomberg's Q&A with reporters today, as passed along by the industrious Adam Lisberg of our City Hall Bureau.

Asked if he'd get involved in any of this year's races for state Senate or Assembly, the mayor said he mostly would not -- but he did single out one lawmaker, Democratic State Sen. Craig Johnson
