Important legislation that will allow municipalities to extend health services and insurance to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers has been signed into law.

"This is good legislation that will help the brave men and women who help keep our neighborhoods safe," Senator Craig M. Johnson (D-Port Washington) said. "This bill will help give many first responders the piece of mind to continue with this dangerous and selfless work."

Redistricting bill passes Senate committee

In an attempt to make the upcoming redistricting process less partisan, a bill passed through the Senate Standing Committee on Investigations Tuesday that would create an independent redistricting commission and end the current practice of allowing the majority leaders of each house to essentially draw their own lines.

The committee heard testimony from former New York City major Ed Koch, a staunch advocate of adopting an independent commission.

So far, there are two “yes” votes in the Senate majority in favor of an independent redistricting commission.

In the wake of former Mayor Koch’s Albany reform press conference at which he released three signed pledges – and one letter – from gubernatorial candidates (announced and in limbo) promising to veto any politically-drawn district lines, Sen. Craig Johnson released the following statement:

The proviso in New York’s public pension system that ensures even convicted embezzlers can continue to collect retirement benefits has long been a sore point with a lot of people, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Long Island community of Roslyn where the former school superintendent Frank Tassone fleeced taxpayers for more than $2 million and was sent to prison in 2006.

ALBANY – The state's spendthrift education bigs could soon get an overdue lesson in government efficiency.

Sen. Craig Johnson (D-L.I.) has called Education Commissioner David Steiner before the Senate Government Efficiency Task Force to explain the agency's extravagant purchasing practices as exposed this week in a series of Post reports.

"We're not going to see any megaprojects in the foreseeable future," Johnson said. "The best thing is to try and ensure that we are reducing the spending that occurs with regard to any megaproject. Now is not the time to be contemplating the big projects."

Among the project's most vehement opponents is state Sen. Craig Johnson (D-Port Washington), who sits on the MTA Capital Program Review Board and would have veto power over the plan.
"It's just not necessary, and I think it would really tear up the fabric of the main line community for decades," Johnson said.

She's finally back home.

Two-year-old Brianna Dacius has been reunited with her Elmont parents after the child was stuck in Haiti for weeks after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in January. Brianna, who had been living with her grandmother in Port-au-Prince since July, had an emotional reunion Friday night with her parents at Kennedy Airport. P

Brianna and her parents appeared in Elmont with state Sen. Craig Johnson (D-Port Washington), who was among those assisting the Dacius family in arranging Brianna's return and who personally paid $504 for her airfare back to New York.
