Statement RE: Hiram Monserrate
"Tonight, I voted to expel Hiram Monserrate from the State Senate.
This vote was not taken lightly and was cast without joy. However, as a father, a husband, and the representative of the residents of the 7th Senate District, it was the correct action.
Mr. Monserrate was convicted of a crime that stemmed from domestic violence. A bi-partisan committee that was formed to examine the circumstances surrounding this incident showed him to be unfit to hold office.
Also, continuing to allow Hiram Monserrate to remain a member of this chamber would send the unacceptable message that this body tolerates violence against women.
Fifty-two other State Senators joined me in this vote for expulsion. This group was bi-partisan, diverse, and representative of every region of this state.
It has been suggested that this vote should not occur in order to protect the Senate Majority.
I rejected that suggestion. This is bigger than who controls the Senate; this is about the very institution of the Senate.
It is also about doing what is right, and I believe this vote was the right thing.”
